My youngest brother came to me the other day and wanted me to look at his 1987 Pontiac Bonneville.

(Front wheel drive, small-midsized, four door auto with a V6)
It has been a while since I have done anything to a car like this.
I know that the problem he is having is common for this kind of car but I cant remember where the information I have on the repair needed is.

(I don't keep things like this around, I like RWD and carburetors)

His car is in good mechanical shape with exception to the following issue:

The car will start only after it has had a couple of hours to get cold.

The car starts up fine and goes wherever he wants to go, but when the ignition is shut off, he is stranded until the car is cold enough to start again.

I remember reading a lot of information on this kind of problem in these early computer cars.

I cant remember the solution.

Is there anyone out there that does?

Under the coil packs, there is a circuit board....Sounds like it is overheating and cutting out. Get one from a wreckers and try it.

I have had good luck Googling (sp?). Be sure to select "GROUPS" when searching. If the problem is common, someone out there has posted a solution.

Not much info here. Does it crank and not fire up? Or does nothing happen when you turn the Ignition to the Start position?

if the car has a ck (crank sensor) don,t rule that out I just recently replaced one though it was a newer car 96 buick regal well what was happening is the guy would be driving it and after driving for a while the car would just cut out and would not restart until the car cooled down long story short the sensor was shorting out. get the car to do it again and test the componet with a dvom.

The motor doesnt turn over but the starter makes some noise.

the fuel pump could be overheating due to a bad relay

Starter is bad......................or a bad connection to the starter.
