need a/c opinion, recharge??

I have a '67 chevy p/u. I finally got the compressor to kick in, bad wiring, but the system is low on r-12. It still has pressure in it. the hoses are flexible and there are no tell tell signs of leaks. The truck sat for many years without being used. My question is should I simply recharge the system, I have 5,1# cans of r-12, or should I not chance wasting my r-12 and take it to a shop for evac and recharge, leak test, etc.

if it was me.....

i'd get the evac.....
heck, sell the r12 on ebay, and you could get you a whole new r134 set up lol,
Willys36 uses something, sez it works good as r12 and is as cheap as 134........

Don't even think of putting that r-12 in your system until you get it serviced, have them check everything and replace ALL of the seals and o-rings. Do you know how much that amount of r-12 is worth? If it were me I would sell the r-12 and convert to 134-a or one of the r-12 substitutes. You probably could get enough out of it to pay for the conversion.

another option is that there companies like red-tec that have a replacement for r-12 that works better than the r-12 does but also contain a sealer which will seal minor leaks. It is fairly inexpencive and alot of shops are using them now

I would also be sure to buy a new dryer ... if your truck was sitting that long, you don't want to take any chances with the dryer -- no way to test 'em; ya just buy a new one when you evac, etc.
