Need Cam Advice, 355

I have posted questions before about my 355 but now I'm tired of trying to make more HP with what I have.

Current, 355, 76 #10 truck casting.
Bored .30 with forged crank
Speedpro flattops,
Edelbrock RPM intake and 650 Edelbrock Thunder carb.
882 heads and a GM 222/222 cam,
turbo 350 with 2500 stall,
HEI ignition,
3:73 rear
1 5/8" headers to 3 1/2 collector

Dyno's at 223HP, 276Torque ( sucks). Want to put on Aluminum Heads, 200cc runners, 64cc chambers.
Considering a XE274(230/236@50) or a XE262 cam. Want to stay under 10.5-1 and run on pump gas. Weekend warrior T-Bucket. Cam advise please, thanks

How much money do you have to spend on a set of heads. The more money you have the more hp you can make. With the xw274h cam I would try to stick closer to a 180cc head though.

Yes, Dyno numbers are RWHP. We figure you can add about 30-35% with auto trans for flywheel HP. 35% gives 292 flywheel HP. Still way under what I want.

Hi Adam and thanks. I can spend up to about 1K on heads. I have looked hard at the Aerohead Racing Dart heads for $700 but even with good recomendation from Chevyhighperformance they seem too close to what I have now. With my flat top pistons and Aluminum 64cc, 180cc runner heads, what do you think my compression would be? Also, can you tell me why you advise against the 200cc runners with my soon to be setup?

Your compression should be right around 10:1. The reason that I recommend the 180 runners is to better match your cam. The 180 heads are better suited for the power range of where you cam is going to be making power. Going with a 200cc head would not be the end of the world, and it would probably make a little more top end power, but I would still recommend the 180's. As far as which head, for $1000, the best I know of is the trick flows.

Here is a trick flow 175cc head, $969 for an assembeled set. These would work well with the xe274h
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
These heads have a 56cc chamber which would take your compression to around 11.3:1 which would probably be too much unless you got different pistons.

If you were willing to try the xe286h (240 246 @.050 duration @.050 .507 .510 lift), that cam would match the 195cc trick flows very well, that combo would make quite a bit more hp, and being in a t bucket, I think you could get away with the 2500 stall. They have a 62cc chamber which would put the motor around 10.5:1 with the flat tops.

What were the dyno numbers at the various rpm's? Is your throttle opening all the way up? Is 2-1/2" the primary tube size? If I make a similar engine in EA3.2 I get:

Took it up to 5K RPM under full throttle. Headers are 1 5/8 out of manifold then to a 3.5 collector.
HP at diff RPMS were as follows:
2600-90
2800-125
3000-145
3200-160
3400-175
3600-185
3800-197
4000-206
4200-212
4400-216
4600-218
4800-218
5000-223
No loss of power as RPM increases but very min gain from 3800 to 5000

Yes I have spent hours reading the combos on that site. nothing reaaly matches what I want to do and lots of the combos are 60's 70's 355 setups.

What is it that you really want to do?

2-1/2" primary tubes would seem to be about a 7 tube size error, according to Ed Henniman. Something in the 1-5/8" range with an appropriately sized collector would make a remarkable difference in your performance. We had a motor similar to yours in a 64 Nova with 1-5/8" headers and it made 260 rwhp with a 2-bbl carb.

Hi, my mistake. I just went out and mesured my headers and the tubes are 1 5/8" and collector is 3 1/2. Don't know where I got that 2 1/2 number????
Thanks

Hi Rac,

I kinda have the same problem as you.
I have a 357 SBC .30 over
Forged pistons
6.0 rods
Lunati roller cam and lifters 290 advertised duration 248 @ .050...555 lift
Roller rockers 1.6
Dart 215 pro1 aluminum heads
Demon 750
Airgap intake
Transmission 700R4
MSD ready to run dist and 6AL ignition box
373 rear gears
2800 stall
Dyno in at 302 RWHP

I too expected more (400 at the least)......I think my problem are that my heads are to big for the combo....I should have gone with the AFR190...
I kick myself for not doing the right thing...
You should listen to these guys they know what they are talking about.
Oh well live and learn I will just have to save up another $1200.00 and go for the AFR190......

Soory you are having problems with those heads. After reading here and a lot of other places, a 180cc will work a lot better for me and thanks to Firestone for his advise.

what CR is your 355 now ? man I would think theres some aftermarket head and cam that would bring your motor into the 400hp range, ( even some thing from ryans page) what is the problem , is your CR is to high with most aftermarket heads ? I think AFRs have some 76cc heads, others prob do too ( I might be wrong ), I know I seen someone made a vortec head that was 68cc, I just seen it on this engine forum. you might ask around. do you need a 68cc 70cc to 76cc head to keep your cr in pump gas range ? cause I like some of the 355 combos. my brother and I are planing on the forged 450hp combo, it was combo 12 and 13 and 14.
