Red face Need Distributor help?

I am working on a 1993 Ford Probe. It has a 2.0, 4 cylinder in it with an automatic trans. It kills after about 3 or more miles of driving, then it wont start back up until it sits for about 5 mins. I was thinking that it was in the distributor but am not totally convinced. I checked for spark and it gets it for 3 or 4 hits then stops. It will backfire when it is trying to be started before the 5 mins. Is this possibly a problem that othere Fords may have had and someone out here might be able to help me figure out. I don't work on many Fords so I am not sure what is comon probems for them.
Thanks for any help given,
.......Brian5........

I did find two tech service bullitins from ford on the 93 probe, 2.0, auto trans. TSB 00-17-01 and TSB 98-07-01 both relate to stalling concerns due to problems with stator and coil in distributor. I'm not saying you need a distributor but there has been distributor issues.

If it has a TFI IV ignition most likely the curved rubber pickup in the distributor has had it. You can tell if it is anything but bone white, brown or black and it's a goner.
