Need Gm posi info

I read somewhere:when looking for posi. rears ; check station wagons. I did and the first Chevy 86 had one. Of course its probably a highway gear so can the posi be taken out and used with better gears 342, 373 etc? I dont know much about different series. So how do you go about using these posi. units from cars with high ratio highway gears? Are they worth getting out of these cars? I think they are 8.5 rears but Id have to look again to see; its been a while since I crawled under there. If it can be used , I know Ill have to get the gear set I want and have someone install , set up gears. thanks

If it's an 8.5" posi unit, the carrier should have either 410408N or 410409N cast into it. 410408N is used with 2.73 and numerically higher gears, and is known as the 3-series carrier. The other is for the lower gears (2.41, etc.), and is called the 2-series carrier.
