I have an 89 chevy caprice that has a stock 305 with a 350 trans. this is my first project basically i want more horsepower and more sound. It is a project car so i dont care bout gas mileage. The best thing you can do to beef up your 305 is pull it and get a 350. The 305 and 350 share the same stroke, but the 305 has a small 3.736 bore while a 350 has a 4 inch bore. Head selection for 305`s are on the low side. The best factory head would be a 601 or 416 casting. To get rid of the TBI injection you`ll need a intake, distributor and a carb. Headers and dual exhaust would be another good idea. What the car needs above all is likely gears.

i agree i wouldn't go putting a bunch of money into a 305, they can be something fun to tinker with to learn, thats how i got started, but i wouldn't do much more than, carb, intake, maybe try and find a set of 416 heads, and some headers, not sure if i would even go much into valvetrain, they can be a fun little motor but dont expect to produce bunches of power, this is just my opinion
