I'm trying to track down the year of the 6 cly. in my 51 Chevy 2 door that I just bought. I was thinking about an engine swap to a V8 but then I thought about working the 6. Not to many around and it seems like a lot of fun! My problem is that I don't know what year my 6 is. I know that it is a newer engine but I need to know the year before I can start to build. Can you help? the numbers are 3836850 /GM 5. Hope to hear from you soon. John

It's a 235 made between 54 and 67.
Most likely between 58 and 62 as far as I can tell,can't find your exact number.

That should be about as close as you need to get for buying parts as the changes to the motors in those years were very slight and most parts are interchangeable,some have different water pump holes and different starter mounts.

Performance parts are out there for these motors,sometimes a little pricey tho as they are not as common as v8 parts.

Clifford performance is a good place to start.

really recomend you get it, its got some cool tricks,

is there 2 valve cover bolts on the valve cover, or a lot around the sides? the 2 on top could indicate that it is a 216/ early 235 which are both babbit bearing motors, later 235's swap right in. I have a '51 Fleetline with the original 235/ powerglide drivetrain, havn't seen another like mine , seen 2dr's with them but not 4dr's.

Thank's guys you have more than answered my question! It is really nice to know that there are other 6 lovers like me. Now if I could do something about the weather I will be able to get started. For now I am just lineing up the parts as I can afford them. You know how it is with a house, wife and kids it takes a while. But at least I have a not too bad ride as it is! Thanks again John
