need help how to wire up an 2001 LS1 into a 79 z28 camaro
I have a 1979 z28 camaro and dropped in a 5.7L LS1 from a 2001 SS Camaro. I have the wiring harness for the motor hooked up and pretty sure all the wiring under the dash is correct but im not sure how to wire the LS1 wiring harness to the wires under the dash.
also the transmission i have installed is a 4L60e and i dont understand how to hook the wiring and sensors to it. all i have hooked up to the transmission is the speed sensor but there are no other places for the other sensors.

Soooo....did you use the harness for the LS1 ? did you keep it fuel injected?
Do you have the PCM? Give us a few more details, it will help get a little closer to an answer.

yes i used the wiring harness for the LS1. i used a brand new FAST wiring harness made for the LS1. keeping it fuel injected. I have the original PCM that came with the motor. My question is mainly about how to hook the motor up to the car. the harness has the wires that go to the sensors on the motor and i have all of those connected to the motor but just confused about the other side of the harness. i know i need all digital gauges for it and have priced them at dakota digital for about $800. does the harness just connect straight to the battery for the power lead and then to the gauges? Ive heard its easy to mess up the PCM and that is what i am most concerened about.

There should be only a few wires that actually go to a 12 Volt + source for the PCM. Your gonna need a wiring diagram. At the very least a pinout diagram for the PCM. I may be able to get one for you but it wont be untill monday.
If the sensors are all wired and plugged in, and the trans connectors are plugged in, about the only thing left would be the fuel pump wiring , fuel tank fuel level , tank pressure sensor value , and a evap canister closed/vent valve / solenoid. A total of about 9 wires. The fuel gauge (and tank pressure sensor)on that car would send its signal to a body module, which would process the value into a CAN type message , which then is sent out on the CAN network. The PCM would use the message to test the EVAP system and to calculate purge amount. The Instrument panel recieves the message and displays the fuel level. I know it probably is confusing but dont sweat it. the car you have the LS1 in , never had OBD 2 or even OBD 1. So none of that should make much difference. The reason I mentioned it was the PCM will set codes for missing components, like the tank pressure sensor, and for things like purge control that probably wont be operative, unless you fab the stuff up and make it work, which is do able, and not a bad Idea if you live in California, as they are cracking down on muscle cars from what I understand. How many wires doyou have left over? what are the colors? where do they originate? Maybe you could post the wiring diagram for the FAST system you have, or a link, also are you running the FAST computer or the stock PCM? The FAST computer may not have the hardware and software to run the 4L60E. Running a stock PCM may have been a better choice.

the wires for the pcm side of the fast wiring harness are:
1. the two main PCM connections 2. brake switch 3. check engine light 4. 4k pulse for electronic speedometer 5. tachometer 6. ALDL 7. Throttle Actuator Control Module 2 (TAC-2) 8. Battery 9. To ignition switch hot with key in on and start positions 10. fuel pump relay serial number for the harness is 1554. (idk if that helps..) Im not using the FAST pcm. im going to be using the stock PCM that came from the 2001 camaro the motor came out of. I dont think i am going to connect the evap system stuff at all. (i live in texas) lol If i bought an all digital guage cluster (from dakota digital) would all the necissary wires be able to connect to the guages or do i need to look for a specific kind of guages for my wires? just dont want to spend $800 and it not even work. |

I'm not sure I understand boss, but it doesnt sound like what you have will make your car run.
A stock PCM needs more harness than what you are describing that the fast harness has. I saw no crank/cam senor mentioned CTS TPS MAF ETC ETC ETC also without the wiring harness for the 4L60E you have nothing to run it. You will now need a stand alone controller and wiring to run the trans. What you should do, is go to the salvage yard and get a complete powertrain harness from a 2001 LS1 car and use the stock PCM you have and run it. Then get a complete wiring diagram for the LS1 on paper and tape it to the windshield,Plug in everything that plugs in,and then look at the power and ground circuits, and wire them in accordingly. There is no "Magic Harness" out there that will just plug and play for your car. The best, and most cost effective way to do a conversion of your type is to get the OE harness, and fab it up nice and neat into your ride. Trust me you will need to bone up on doing the wiring to get it to turn out right,in the end you will like it. If you retain the OBD II diagnostic connector, that is a big plus, as you can change the tune with a laptop, a few cables and a program . Keeping it fully intact will keep you 50 state legal, will be easier to diagnose, and is tuneable for more fun. Not to mention those guys at the chevy dealer will drool when they look under the hood. Honestly, it is by far cheaper and better to hybridize a factory harness into your ride. For me it would be a piece of cake and a pleasure. Plenty of help here, just get your mind made up after studying the problem at hand and go for it.I am sure we can come up with something. If you can post a wiring diagram of the harness you have I would be interested to see it, just to clarify whether or not it even has any use in your build.

Geez chadmann. I wished I had better news for you. Sorry. I know how those things are put together and it just seems like there needs to be more of a harness.Keep us posted , I would like to know how you make out.
If you could at least post the part number for the harness you have I will look it over to see if it has any place on your build.

I love this site but there's a site for this specific swap. Go to the "conversions and hybrids" section of Chevy | Camaro | Firebird Reviews, Performance Parts, Modifications - LS1Tech.com This swap has been done mant times.
