Need help losing weight.

getting ready to break out the holesaw on the body of my car to bring down the weight some. i know that i need to leave a bit of material on either side of the holes, but dont know how much. i was wondering if someone could give me a good rule of thumb to go by so that i dont end up with a bunch of stress cracks. i recall having heard once, that it was something like 1/4 of the diameter of the hole left all around. (if im drilling a 1 inch hole leave a quarter inch around it)

thanks guys
-chris

well i went and managed to find the answer to my own question. i was in the scrapyard the other day and came across a section of crossdrilled airplane fuselage. i had some wire so i made some bends to get the measurements. it was a 3.5 inch hole with 1.5 inches of metal on either side of it. so thats comes out to almost half the diameter of the hole both sides. thought id pass it on

There is no fixed dimension or ratio. It entirely depends on the load, the thickness of the metal, and the hole size. I'm an aerospace engineer and I guarantee you that there are pages of structural analysis to substantiate the holes you saw. A hole in a structural member causes a stress concentration. If you don't understand what you're cutting out DON'T arbitrarily put holes in. Now, if we're talking about non-structural panels, then have at it, but if you're swiss-cheesing a frame, not a good idea.

thanks joe. I had planned on leaving everything in between the front control arms and the springs on the four link. i was looking to get more of a simple ratio to go by for when i started on the interior panels. i am hoping to keep the body from stress cracking itself to death. i live down a ratty old road, and it takes its toll on everything. i knew that the aerospace boys have it down to a science and thought i might ball park it from there. i remember hearing about how Ed Roth's mysterion would stress crack its frame from hand pushing it on a trailer, and its ride on the trailer between sites and getting pushed off the trailer.

so any ballpark numbers/ ratios then for nonloadbearing sections of frame? how about for load bearing interior panels? just a ballpark would be GREAT.

thank you
chris
