Need help with main caps

Wats up everyone. I have an 86' monte carlo ls with a stock 305. In my garage I have a 4bolt 350 smallblock on a stand, casting numbers on it read 3970010.The engine has had some machine work done to it. I plan to put it in the monte but im stuck on a small problem now. The engine didnt come with the main caps so i bought some from ebay, but the problem now is since the crankshaft has had machine work done to it. I have to check if the main caps will fit or do some sort of machine work to the main caps them selves. But im not really sure what to do. So if anybody can help me out or give some sort of advice on what to do i would really appreciate it. I really dont want to stay stuck with a stock 305 in my car. Thanx

You need to have the block align bored so that the main caps will match the block and everything will be straight.

This must be done anytime you have caps that are different from what the block was originally produced with. Even if you bought brand new caps you would still have to have this done.

Then it is all about finding the right main bearings for what ever is taken off the crank and main caps.

Here's the procedure explained....
http://www.eddiesvalvegrinding.com/boring-honing.htm

You may see the honing referred to as "line honing" or "align honing". Means the same thing. Honing is done with a stone.

You may see the boring referred to as "line boring" or align boring". Means the same thing. Boring is done with a cutting tool.

Yep, as said above, and when/ if the engine gets assembled pay close attention to the slack in the timing chain and alignment of the centerlines of your crank and trans input. Depending on how aggressive the guy is at the line hone machine will determine how much the crank centerline will change.

Check your deck hight too.

There are special shorter timing chain/sprocket sets available too, in case the crank centerline to cam centerline ends up shorter.
