need help with rocker/lifted noise

Ok recently iv been having a ticking noise.it sounded like a header leak so i put new gasket on and no change in the tick so i pulled off the valve cover and ran the engine with it off and the sound was definitely coming from somewhere in the valve train.turned off the engine and inspected to see if any rockets were lose or had any slop in the valve lash .everything seemed to be right.the engine has about 800/1000 miles on it and have not changed the oil yet.i think a lifter my be collapsed ... was thinking on re doing the valve lash a see if it go's a way...here's some specs on my engine

Sbc 389 stroker
650 DP holley
Camel hump heads 194s
XE 284 comp cam
1.5 self aligning roller rocker
comp cam harden push rods

Thanks Rob

The fast ramp on a the XE284H-10 cam makes it a bit noisey at idle.
oil and lifter bleed down trate make a big difference.
fast bleed "hi rev" lifters make more noise too. HT-817R

Why are you using the self aligning rocker with a old style head that has
guide plates or a push rod guide slot in the head.?

A thicker oil like rottella 15W 40 will probabily idle quieter with the xe HYD cam.

The solid lifter and solid roller XE street cams are actually quieter at idle.

You may have one pesky lifter with a bit of dirt inside it.
Make sure all the push rods spin when you rev up the motor.
Set the lifter preload as required with the engine hot and running.
If it needs 1 turn give it 1 turn preload.
When resetting the preload back off the rocker so it clicks a lot and let it normalize. Then set the 1/2 to 1 turn lifter preload.
Give it the preload it wants needs to idle quiet.

I used to pretty quiet .but i have been racing it a lil ...it still builds great power but its only that one at as been ticking the other side of the engine sounds fine ..but you mite be right.i mite have a spec of crud in the lifter.i did notice when i have the valve cover off running the engine that one of the rockers didn't fill up oil as much as the others were ..so i thinking i should pull out that lifter and clean it or just change the oil with something thicker

It is possible one the cam lobes is wearing out.
These cams are critical for oil lube and correct break in.

If you are "racing" get a solid lifter cam.
Less headaches more power and performance.
Use a good oil with zinc and a bit of moly added.
The Shell rotella oil has the good additives to keep the lifters
internals clean.
The GM hyd lifters with the steel foot are the best hyd lifters you can buy.

On mine with the XE284H-10 using normal 10w-30 oil it was annoyingly noisey
at idle when hot. A simple change to Rotella 15w-40 oil made a huge difference.
Is very acceptable now. The XE284H-10 cam does perform very well.

Give the lifters the rocker nut preload adjustment they need. There are may factors that effect this.
Mine likes and needs a good full turn of preload. No problem with rpm. (decent hi perf springs)

So F bird 88 your xe284 made the same ticking noise then after changing the oil it went away.now if one of the lifter was not pumping oil up to the rockers Like the others were that could make it tick??

check for pushrod rotation when running.
May need to rev it to get rotation. ya I know it makes a mess.

If yu cannot see pushrod rotation at all on that noisey rocker:

You may have a cam lobe or lifter foot going south.
or could be a internal lifter oil dirt issue.

Or the rocker arm is fubared.

These cams are never perfectly quiet.

Now that you got good oil in it.
Some times readjusting the rocker nut a few times wil free up a sick dirt infected lifter oil metering valve/ball.

Give it some driving time and see if it improves.

Mine was pesky at first.

it can , yes. I;d give the rotella T oil time to work its magic.

Like I said you may need to monkey with the rocker nut adjustment.
Mine likes generous preload.

Right at the top, typical hot rodder hyd lifter preload is noisey on mine.

You do have screw in or pinned rocker studs , right?
