Need Help in setting distributor

I have a ht383e stroker. I had to remove the heads and noticed heavy black carbon on my plugs. It is a vortec engine with a cam sensor. I can not use the cam sensor since my computer is for a 95 non vortec which does not have hookups for the cam sensor. My question is do I find 0 deg. tdc by putting the groove on the harmonic balancer directly below the sensor? I want to be sure I am not A tooth off when reinstalling the distributor. There isn't any way to put a degree indicator on the front of the engine.

1 black soot on plugs is a rich condition.

2 you certainly have a good question!

putting a TDC scribe line on a dampener

that has never had one.

guess you could put a dial indicator on top

of block cyl #1 and run it up and down equal

and in between is TDC.

like .10" piston on way up and .10" piston on way down.

put pencil marks at these two and then permanent mark in between.

have a nice day!

Thanks, The engine is in the truck so I will have a hard time using a dial indicator. But a great idea for future reference.
