The rollers are set the same way as non roller rockers.

Just try advancing the timing for now without a light and see if you pick up some better idle quality. Switch to manifold vac, losen the dist hold down but leave it so that the dist is still very stiff to turn, turn the dist about 1/4-3/8 inch ccw, fire it up. Tee a vacuum gage to the manifold vac sorce. If it runs better then you are getting closer, I would still use a light to set it for sure before you drive it, you may need to recurve your dist and set the mech and vac limits though either way. As well with the base at 20 or so you may need a ignition kill swicth connected to the BAT terminal of the HEI for hot starts. These things are not hard to do once you get at it,,,welcome to hotrodding.

There are many conditions that may be the culprit but by trying different things you can narrow it down piece by piece, the timing is just one of them.

I gotta go for now, later, good luck
TJ

Just a lil update TJ, pulled a plug last night & it was black as night. I'm going to buy new plugs at lunch & try this weekend & see what happens.

Which plug do you recommend? It has the Accel shortie plug. I heard the AC Delco plugs are pretty good??

What type of heads? maybe pull a valve cover and check the casting number.
AC plugs are better than accell IMO. Do you have any miles on this motor or is it fresh and never ran?

I would be interested to find out what the compression ratio works out to be. That big cam is going to need some decent compression to provide a good squeeze. Without the compression there it will tend to run rich and load up at idle which will foul plugs. That is another reason for advancing the timing to help achieve a good burn

Find out; The head casting numbers and/or cc of chambers, the piston type and/or part number, the cyl bore, the deck height, the head gasket thickness

Something else to consider is the the tranny auto or stick? torx convertor stall speed/type, rear gear ratio.

Just looking at the big picture,,,and you must advance the timing IMO, have you tried that yet?
