That's a very good question and I am shocked that no one on the board has posted a 'how-to' article in a Journal. There have been various Rod magazine articles over the years showing how it is done but I can't think of a specific one. The steps are basically to x-brace and stabilize the sheet metal square and plumb with a bunch of 1" square tubing. Then remove the wood and clean/prime w/ weld through primer where the new bracing goes. Then using eh appropriate size thin-walled rectangular and square tubing, methodically MIG in the new structure. Isn't brain surgery and goes just like you imagine it should.
