There is a carb expert that's a regular on the corvette forum. He writes papers on tuning Qjets on Holleys (and distributors).
His name is Lars Grimsrud. I rebuilt & tuned my q-jet per his instructions and it came out great.
Note: before you start adjusting the carb, make sure the distributor is set up correctly as the others have mentioned.

With his permission I am posting his paper.

Cheers

EDIT:
Note: I can't post his paper - too big. Please email me and I'll send it to you.

Last one -- 11

There is probably an easier way to do this, but I'm not a computer guy.

Ok so there is an allen screw (hidden behind the ele. choke) for adjusting the secondary butterflies, I had to remove the ele. choke to make adjustments….what’s up with that?

Got the butterflies readjusted equally to idle at 800-900rmp’s, timing is 18-34, messed with the mixture screws…NO improvement. Rich, lagging, popping from the carb.

K-star, I do have the idle ease feature (some instruction on adjustment would be cool), and my plugs are “Champion RC9YC” gapped at .035 (I think I need to get fresh set going see about some autolite shorties).

Speedfreak2, thanks for the offer, I will take you up on that as soon as I can make some time.

Zimmo, thank for going through the trouble to post Lars Grimsrud’s tuning instructions, I have started to read them and they are going to be very helpful, (they should be put in the KB).

Sorry for dragging this out, I have only been able to work on it 5-10 minutes a night.
I believe that I have just about got all the information needed to just get out there and figure it out.

406chevelle,

You do not have to remove the choke to reach the secondary butterfly adjustment screw. You can reach it with an allen wrench behind the choke assembly.

Open the Idle-Eze will allow more air into the carburetor, leaning it out, which will allow you to close the butterflies futher. There would have been an addendum sheet included with the instructions of the carburetor outlining this.

When you're saying the carburetor is "popping" is it popping or backfiring through the carburetor? If it is when exactly is it doing this?
