one with a stud with a nut around it is the adjustment

but dont go crazy with it because it will cause stuck or sticking in center steering position if you tighten it very much

if the box is that worn you will want to get a new one

adjusting it is not very recommended

it is super old and worn and probably beyond its regular service life surely by now

so..

unlike newer vehicles ( by newer I mean '55 or so and later ). the old boxes typically require adjustment... typically there are 2 adjustments.. over/ center and the worm gear adjust.. over center is what you will need to adjust.. it's a Gemmer box on that era Ford, so you'll see a jamb nut on what looks like a stud.. center steering, disconnect drag link and check to see just how much play you got ( wiggle the pitman arm ).. then loosen the jamb nut and you can turn the eccentric on the other side and rotate it in to adjust it, until you'v got just a slight bit of play and lock it down and reassemble

Steering Box

I HAVE A 53 MERCURY & I PUT A P/S BOX FROM A 1988 ISUZU TROOPER
IN MINE & IT FIT REAL NICE.I ALSO TOOK THE PITMAN ARM FROM THE
ISUZU & BELIEVE IT OR NOT BUT THE PITMAN ARM EVEN FIT THE DRAG LINK.
IF YOU DECIDE TO GO THIS ROUTE MAKE SURE THAT YOU TAKE THE HOSES
& THE P/S PUMP.IT WORKS OUT GREAT I LOVE IT.OTHER P/S PUMPS THAT WILL WORK ALSO ARE

AMIGO-89-93---PASSPORT-94-97
PUP (isuzu pick up) 88-95------TROOPER-87-93
