Did you get the transformer box and battery box (took oddball 2 or 3 volt dry cells IIRC) that runs the tach?? Otherwise, there is no way to use it like a modern tach...it doesn't just use 12V+, a ground, coil neg- and a 12v+ lighting circuit like the modern stuff does.

You could Google search, there is a company out there that takes these old tachs and converts them to modern electronics while keeping the vintage case, face and needle.

Only reason I even know this is my Step-dad has the whole deal packed away in cotton from the early 60's Catalina he had.

Never saw a battery box for one of these. I thought all it needed was the sender (red unit) that converted the signal. I have a copy of wiring instructions for a similar looking setup but the sender only has 3 screws, not the 4 on this one. I am thinking there is an extra 'Trans' terminal that isn't used? One trans to distributor, and '+/- ' to the tach. That's how the 3-wire diaram has it, w/o the extra screw, no battery box mentioned.

The battery box version we have may just be a year or two older than yours, IDK...revisions happened pretty often back in those days, it was the infancy of add-on gauges and tachs industry back then.

Sorry I couldn't be more help??

Maybe someone over at the H.A.M.B. board may be better help??

No problem. Yes I have seen several versions of transflormer boxes shown with what appears to be the same gauge on the front from that era. No problem, I am used to everything I get for my nostalgia projects being very obsolete w/ zero information available. Try finding a transmission rebuild manual for a Phord Cruise-O-Matic MX tranny some time!!

You are correct, that red chunk is a battery box. What a dumb design even in the early 60s. They had plenty fo 12V power to work with and they went with batteries.
