Need Opinion on tranny and motor

I just picked up a 70 chevelle with a powerglide and no motor and a chevy 12 bolt rear end. I'm gonna restore it and my desire is to have a car that I can cruise, but that can also blow away the imports that flood my town and perform in a quarter mile.
I was thinking of putting a 383 stroker engine in and replacing the powerglide with a four speed manual, but then I was told I should keep the powerglide and buy an high performance torque converter.
I would appreciate anybody's opinion/experience on which transmission and/or motor you have found to work well.
thanks Jeremy

get rid of the powerglide and get a 200 or 700r4 thats well built. the 200r4 has a better gear spread, but with a low end motor like a 383 stroker you may be better off with a 700r4. its a great trans if you want to cruise, they both have overdrive, and the 700 has a real low first gear. you could almost compare a powerglide to 2nd and 3rd gear of the 700r4. or yeah you could go with a manual 4 speed

I once owned a 70 SS and I can't say anything good about the way it performed. So when you say "restore" I think return to it's original showroom condition. Maybe restify would be a better word. Since I personally believe that all race cars should have 3 pedals, I am all with you on the 4 speed.
