Are there any sight holes in the differential? If there are flash a light in there and if there are clutch discs in there, you will know what you have. Just curious but what did you pay for it?

It is supposed to be a all gear Detroit tru-trac. No you can't see inside much. I won't say anything about where untill I am sure of what it is. If it is not then you will here a lot! There are a lot of "buyers beware" subjects on our forums. That's one of our duties to each other right?

It doesn't look like a trutrac to me...but I don't know what it is.

TruTrac

Note the halves are bolted together and the helical gears are visible from the outside

The only thing is, that the picture is of a 9" tru-trac. Nobody has a picture of a 8"!

Why don't you email a picture to Detroit and ask?

I don't think their 8 is as crudely built as yours..... It appears that there is insufficient room for any gear-works inside that ring gear...

There was an article in a Ford mag a couple years ago.

I don't see room for any kind of spider gears, or posi clutches/cones of any kind. In fact, it looks like some kind of a crude spool to me. If that's what it turns out to be, I wouldn't use it on the street (just my opinion).

Take it apart if you can (most actual posi's are rebuildable) and see what's in there. Also, any numbers on it (not the pumpkin but the center unit itself)?
