I have a new power steering pump and gear box for my 81 C10. I am about to bolt the box on, but am wondering if I need to do anything to it while it is out. The engine is out of the vehicle and at the machine shop so it will be a while before I get the whole project done.

Not really, no. When it's installed, full of fluid, bleed/purge it by turning the wheel lock to lock several times, keeping the reservoir full.

Just make sure the front wheels are off the ground when you start the engine the first time after filling the new pump. Gently turn the wheels lock-to-lock. You'll hear groaning. It will go away after the air bleeds out of the system. Top off the pump (expect to see foamy fluid at first), put the truck on the ground, drive away. You may hear light groaning for the first few miles if you haven't quite gotten all the air out of the system. Nothing to worry about.
