Need Quadrajet Choke & Carb Help?

I've got a M4ME electric choked Quadrajet (17084226) from an 84 Truck with a 305 on top of my newly rebuilt 350 Chevy. Cold morning starts are difficult. It starts ok but is a bugger to keep running when placed in gear at idle. Idle goes real low when dropped into gear, to about 500-600 rpm and have low vacuum (power brakes take more effort). Runs great when warmed up. This carb is listed for both the 305 and the 350 for that year. Let me start right off by stating that I am no carb guru and am a total neophyte when it comes to qjets. Looking at my Haynes manual doesn't help. I'm seriously contemplating a visit to my FLAPS and replacing the electric choke with one of those universal kits that convert it to manual pull choke. After all, my truck is a 56, so the pull choke would not be out of place. Any thoughts or suggestions? I've also noticed that after warming up the rpm will sometimes continue to increase when sitting at idle -- sometimes up to 1500 rpm. Any thoughts on that?

Finally, I'm wondering if this is the best carb given that it was set up for the 305 and is now on a 350. I am running Summit 1102 cam, headers, A/T, 2 1/2" exhaust with Flowmasters and a 2.73 rearend for fuel economy. Help, please!!

Sorry to adjust the electric choke try unscrewing the screws and turning it clockwise till its at a good point then tighten it back up,sometimes its best to take it in to be calibrated and rebuilt if youre unsure on what youre doing cause sometimes you get one that just doesnt want to act right

I would also be checking for vacuum leaks...........There may be a gap in a gasket when cold, but it seals up when warm and things expand a bit.

What are you running this in? It may be a computer controlled quad. They used them in the 80's for emission control. If it is then its idle fuel mixture is controlled by the computer. If you don't have a computer it will not idle/start very good. I am rebuilding a mid 70's quad for my engine to get away from computer issues.

I assume you re-adjusted idle mix? You'll also need to re-jet since at fast idle you're into the primaries a little bit. If its still jetted for the 305, it will be lean.
