need some SBC advice/help!!!

yesterday I was driving my truck home, about a 10 mile drive, and white smoke started pouring out exhaust pipe (true dual exhaust, was only on driver's side pipe) I got the truck home, and checked the radiator, which had coolant in it, but way down towards bottom of the tank. I'm pretty sure I blew the head gasket on the driver's side. The motor ran a little warm, but not in the red on the gauge. So today, when I went out, I figured I'd fire it up, and park it on the pavement, to make the repair easier. And when I hit the key, all I got was a grinding sound. Did I lock the motor up? Any body ever go through this before? I don't want to take the time to repair the head gaskets and all the related labor if the motor is junk. My thanks in advance for any insight and help I can get.

by the way, the truck is an 84 chevy K-10, carb. no 'puter!!
Also, the dipstick seemed clean of antifreeze, or "chocolate milk" looking stuff.

Pull the plugs and pump all the coolant out of the cylinders.

so, your pretty sure I didnt "cook" the engine? would a shop vac work to suck out the coolant? or could I save some work and just fix it on the gravel? lol just didnt want to work/lay on gravel

also, is there anything else major I could have done to this engine, that I could check for, in other words, I dont want to fix it if it needs a bunch of other stuff now. IE, cracked intake etc.?

you probably have a cylinder full of coolant, pull all the plugs and try to turn it over with the starter, it should "pump" out the coolant on the offending cylinder. Re-install plugs and see if it will fire, if so move it over the concrete.

thanks, I'll try that after work tommorrow, I'll post how it all went. this motor only has around 60 thousand on it, but it is a RECON reman. engine from advance auto from about 5 or 6 years ago. I wonder if its past its prime? Anyone have any experience with these reman. engines? Do they seem to last? I figure most guys on here seem to build their own engines, but I lack the facilities and a lot of the tools needed to do that.

OK, so now I've got the thing tore down to the cylinder heads, all the bolts are out on both sides. Now I'm having a problem getting the darned things to dislodge from the block. I don't want to pry in between them obviously. Tried using a block of wood and a hammer. They don't want to budge. Anybody have any tricks to get 'em loose? also, when I get them off finally, what things should I check for? I want to make sure that the motor only needs head gaskets, and that there is no damage anywhere. Thanks in advance for any help, its greatly appriciated!!!!

I have seen folks wrap a small pry bar with a cloth and insert that into one of the intake ports and pry the head upward.

Make sure you have 34 head bolts before you pry too much. Any number less than 34 means they're not all out.

yes all 34 were out. I went out earlier and gave it a gentle nudge with a cloth wrapped breaker bar (handle end) and it popped loose, and low and behold, #7 cylynder full of antifreeze, and head gasket had a weird "v" shaped kink in it, inward. pretty sure that was the problem.

tommorrow I'll take it all over to the shop, and get everything cleaned up good, degreased, and repainted. I'll post when I get it back together, let you guys know if I got it or not.

Doc here,

Try putting the plugs back in, and cranking it..Sometimes the compression will "Blow" them loose..

You WILL have to reset the Distributer when you reassemble it though..

If you have an Engine lift, you can Chain each head one at a time, and SLOWLY jack it up until they pop loose..If you start lifting the car, stop..something is still attached!

would high reving the motor do this ? I was sort of "running" a friend of mine in another truck the day I was driving it home, I "might of revved it a little high

Maybe, If it was running hot..Or had a very tiny leak and was hydraulicking a bit ..but usually , no.

well, i know i noticed a day when i was getting little whisps of white out the tailpipes about a month ago, when it was warm out, and I put it out of my head until i remembered it when this happened. maybey that was a small leak
come to think of it, this motor has always "used" small amounts of coolant, since I bought it from advance auto about 6 yrs ago. But I always attributed this to my coolant overflow bottle non-return type, it just has an overflow spout off the side of it.
