I have the diode here and it has a color band on one side of it. Does the side with the band go on the negative or the positive side of the fan?
I think you would put the striped end toward the ground.

With a diode the power flows from the end without the stripe to the end with the stripe.

thanks Bruce, so do you agree that the striped side of the diode will go on the positive terminal of the fan as drawn in the above link schematic?

I agree that the banded end of the diode should be connected to the positive motor lead. That way while the fan is powered, the diode stops the current from passing directly through to the ground lead...which would be a short circuit. If you hooked the diode up the other way, with the banded end to the ground lead, the diode would fry instantly when the fan relay came on.

Good luck....

thanks Joe...I figured if the banded end was on the positive side then when the fan is shut off and still freewheeling then the generated electricity would bleed off to ground

you guys are always the best
