Need a year for my motor

These are the numbers I found on what I believe to be a 292 Chevy engine, but want to make sure. CON23 G143 473483. I have this motor sitting on my bench in hopes to install it into my 1965 20 series pick-up soon! need a fly wheel for it and other things before the install. Can anyone help me with the Year? Thank you Much!

Sean

I guess onne needs to type out loud to figure things out. lol. Here's what I got, Flint Plant-June 19th-1981 305 w/140HP.

now . . . .next ? is, do any of you think that this will work in my 1965 C-20? I'm a little disappointed in the year I guess cuz I'm thinking it may not work . . . BUT, if it can work, it's close to 20 years newer than I thought. So hopefully thats a PLUS!

Any thoughts? More the merrier please!

Thank You!

It's a 305 sbc. Should bolt in. You might need to get different motor mounts and towers.
What tranny you got?

STAIDL39 03-18-2013 04:23 PM

5 speed on the floor.

The truck I wanna put the 305 in used to have a 250 in it that I just found out to be a CE or "Chevy Exchange" and it was #12,569 produced from the Flint Plant in 1968.

so you're saying the bell housings will line up?

this 305 I am understanding is a Bigger motor than the 250 it had before? I know it's newer. . . just wanna make sure it'll be sufficient enough.

RWENUTS 03-18-2013 04:34 PM

Sufficient enough for what purpose. A daily driver? Yes! Drag racing! No!
You say 5 speed. What 5 speed?
Besides mounts you'll need exhaust manifolds that fit or headers. Maybe a bigger radiator. Different starter. Some wiring changes. Possible throttle control changes.
Six banger and 305 mount in different locations too.

what are the "towers"?

I am very much a rookie in all this terminology and am getting this truck Drivable for my 15 year old for when he gets "legal" to drive. HA!

Thanks again!

STAIDL39 03-18-2013 04:37 PM

alright so I have more homework to do regarding the tranny . . .how I find out which one I have?

Am aware of manifold and electrical.

RWENUTS 03-18-2013 04:38 PM

Towers are part of the engine mounts. Towers are the brackets that bolt to the frame crossmember. Motor mounts bolt to them.
A 2 piece system.

STAIDL39 03-18-2013 04:41 PM

The radiator is heavy duty and New. So thats taken care of. And already ordered out new starter for the 305. PArts store said for a Camero, which will be more than enough for the truck??

Take a pic of the tranny from the bottom side.
If the shifter linkage is on the side it's not a 5 speed. 5 speed has it on top.
You might be further ahead to join up on the 67-72 chevy truck forum.
Lots of knowledge here but not specific to your build.
