neutral safety switch

Hi all,
I have a '76 trans am and im trying to get it to fire up. I was told that the car wont start because i dont have the neutral safety switch, and that i could jump the neutral safety switch wire to a common wire. is it really the neutral safety switch that is keeping my car from running? and if i do jump the wires, is that how i would go about doing it?

thanks all

your starter circuit runs thru your neutral safety switch so you don't try and start the car while it is in gear. you can bypass the switch altogether to make your car start, but why not just replace the neutral switch and keep the car the way it's supposed to be?

If the car will crank, but won't start, it isn't the neutral safety switch. Also, most cars have the back-up lights going thru that switch.
