neutral switch?

so i bought my 89 in october of 2009 from a scrap yard. it started up and ran and drove on the spot. but when we got home about two weeks later there was nothing at the key switch the car would no longer start. so we figured the neutral switch went out of it. so i went out to the parts store and bought a new neutral switch and installed it. the car still wouldn't run. so i had my friend come out and look at it and we tested wires for hours on end. we finally got the car to start but we had to hot wire it using a jumper wire from the wiring harness that the neutral switch hooks up to and we have had to start it that way since what could be the problem??

Possible blown fuse link or fuse. You need to get a wiring diagram and trace out the feed for the switch.

Does this car have VATS (the little resistor chip in the key)?

I dont think hot wiring the NSS would take VATS out of the picture. It is controlled from the computer and would shut down the fuel pump and ignition.
