Hello guys I know some of you are familiar with some of my builds over the years since I have been on here but I am looking for some more advanced tech here on getting a custom cam.
I know all the basic information such as the lift and seat to seat duration, lobe separation angle and opening and closing of the valves and ramp rate intensity and overlap etc and how rear gears along with transmission used and stall converter have an effect on cam size along with compression and I know what I am kinda of looking for but I am wanting to make sure before I get one made.
Here is what my engine setup will be.
Dart 350 shp small chevy 4.00 bore
Holley 750 hp double pumper ( Also have a 650 dp as well to switch between)
Dart platinum iron eagle 200cc cylinder heads 72cc chamber
compression ratio around 9.5 with decked block and felpro 1003 head gasket
Scat 3.480 forged crank and dss forged flat top pistons two valve relief
Scat 5.7 h beam rods full floating.
Looking for 400 plus hp and max horsepower range at 6000 rpm and it would just level off from there. I know I could have done 383 stroker or 400 cubic inch wise but I am not racing this and am keeping this as only a hot street cruiser only. When I cruise down the highway at 55mph I am at about 2700 rpm on the tach and at 70mph I am at 3100 rpm.
vehicle is 96s10 3.42 rear posi and a turbo 350 and looking to get a stall converter in the 2500-3000rpm range. I have only shorty headers for the time being but will upgrade at a later date. I run a 2.5 inch dual exhaust with turbo high flow mufflers.
I know comp cams and howards and lunati make custom grinds but many times when you call tech they just for the most time seem to just want to sell cams more so then give a person truly what they need for the best performance and best for the build.
I know you get the cam picked out first and then build around it and I already do got the heads and stuff but since I kinda already know what to put together here I just want to make sure on the cam part and get something really good that will give me the good potential of my build.
I am looking for something similar to the voodoo hydraulic roller cam style but such marketing hype out there one does not truly know what is truly all the best as they are for selling more then giving the best performance.
My old cam was a lunati voodoo hydraulic roller 270/278 219/227 @ 50 515/530 lift 1.5 ratio 106/112 lsa. I am looking for something just a little bigger around 225 ish intake and 233ish exhaust @ 50 and to stay between 110 to 112 lobe separation angle and no more then mid 60's of overlap and make at least 14 inches of vacuum in park.
I see the lunati bootlegger cams and yes I know they are marketing them for the old sound thing and I don't want anything to be for that purpose as I once had a comp big mother thumper roller cam and it was a horror. But studying the specs on the lunati bootlegger 276/300 224/236 @ 50 554/554 lift ( don't know if that is 1.5 or 1.6 ratio) and it has 70 degrees of overlap and the intake has 52 ramp rate and 62 exhaust ramp rate.
If I were to take that cam as is and have the intake center line moved up to 108 and the lobe separation angle to 112 that gives me 64 degrees of overlap and would make for a cleaner idle and more vacuum but how much I don't know and I see the intake lobe is base off of the voodoo style cam but the exhaust is a little easier on the ramp rate and thus more duration from seat to seat and quite a bit of 12 degree split. I know extra exhaust duration helps for better exhaust flow if there is a slight restriction from what I read.
I don't know with the bootlegger cam by changing the 104/108 lsa to 108/112 if they would make it perform better and if it would be a good running cam or not or if no matter how you do with it it's no better then a thumper cam which i would not want.
I don't want any of the comp extreme engergy roller grinds as compared to the voodoo line they seem to make less power and less vacuum compared to a similar voodoo cam and harold brookshire was part of making the voodoo line and they are not as hard on closing the valves at least that is what I have read from some forums of folks who have spoke to him etc.
I sent all my info to lunati and bullet cams but they never got back to me but some extra advance info would be appreciated here if anyone is willing to give me some more options on what to ask for and to whom I should maybe give a call too to see about a custom grind.
Thanks guys
