new car need help

ok well a couple of weeks ago i bought a 1991 chevy cavailer for $100 and theres something wrong with the tranny. ok well when the cars off u can chagnes the gears to whatever ones u want to but when the car starts up its stuck in that one gear and u cant change it. can anyone tell me whats wrong cuz ive been told its the pressure plate but i wanted to make sure before i bought it.ok well u can still drive the car. if u put it in first gear it starts rolling and starts right up and u can drive but when u come to a stop it dies. the clutch dosnt engage when u push it in. when your driveing u can sometimes pull the stick out of gear and put it into a diffrent one. and sometimes it dosnt start at all.....

100$ for the car and 800$ for a tranny rebuild is still a 900$ car. My mom had an old cavalier when I was younger, worked great for a long long time.

Bad clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder. A pain to replace, but not too expensive.

it can be any one or a group of failures with the release of the clutch / pressure plate.

That means from the clutch pedal to the pressure plate something is wrong, not letting the clutch release fully so the trans can be shifted.

Mayb a pilot bearing froze up on the shaft? Does it have a pilot bearing?

Its either something wrong with the clutch and or linkage or ..... if it has been sitting up a long time..the clutch could be stuck.
