New car/Tach problems

Hello. I just bought a 1991 Mustang 2.3 litre, 5 speed.

I was driving down the highway at about 100 K/hr, when the check engine light came on. I slowed down and realised my car was 'apparently' revving very low, so I popped it into third and stepped on it (at this time the tach now showed 2000 rpms, in 3rd gear), and the engine went real loud as if it were over revving, but the tach showed contrary.

So I stopped, and took it easy and by ear from then to home.

I went out this morning, and the check engine light was off, and everything was fine. After about 20 minutes, the light came back on, and the Tach problem came back.

Any idea what sensor this is, and why?

Thank you.

If the check engine light came on then it has a code, why not go to autozone where they check the code for free? this sure beats trying to guess what the problem may be and spending money on parts you don`t need trying to chase the problem down.

No Autozone here, but I will look for a shop that will check for free.

Im mainly concerned about whether something could blow if I don't get it fixed right away or not.
