I was searching the specs of any post '85 GM truck, and happened upon the 1996 Yukon. It's the same wheel base as my '58 GMC, but is 5.4" wider. Is there some overriding reason I shouldn't think about swapping out the whole frame - assuming one was available for a decent price? Doing the math, 5.4" is 2.7" on each side, and it seems there would be plenty of wheel-well on each side to accomodate.

That would be the way to go,
because alot of car builders are doing this.
Think about it, nice ride and great running gear.

that's what I was thinking, and the replacement parts issue would be solved, too. I'll have to think about it awhile. Maybe wait for someone that's done something similar to offer some advice.

Good idea...but be prepared for a lot of work in the floor and body mount areas...they are not likely to line up and will need some fabrication.

Old truck new frame
camwinder here, I have a 53 Ford f 100 that has an 84 full size Chevy frame that was just shortened to fit the wheel wells, but not narrowed and there is no clearance problems. It's been together for about 23 to 24 years and I drive it every day, haul parts, pull my car trailer and no problems. I would say a newer frame is a great idea.

Thanks guys. I have no idea what a 96 Yukon frame would cost. I'm just starting the search. Yah, I expected the body mounts would have to be altered, but I would think motor and transmission mounting will be about the same. In terms of cost, by the time you replace the front suspension and rear end - including breaks, etc. I suspect I'd have a bit of money in the old frame - maybe it'll be close to the same. At 59 I hope to be driving it in 25 years. Anyone know of an online site where such things come up for sale?

right now i'm starting a 63 chevy short wide on a 97 Tahoe chassis. no problem its done all the time. some people think this kind of stuff is not accepable. But I also have a 57 chevy on a 2005 progressive chassis, a 31 model a on a 2004 rodster shop chassis and nobody thinks this is strange. The end result is the same, Modern suspention and related componants under a old body. and besides the Yukon/Tahoe chassis is just a pickup chassis. most of your fab. work will be in the core support area. :welcome:

You might want to look at car part dot com. Even if there is not one close, it might give you an idea of cost.
