new guy

hello everyone,my grandfather just passed away and he left me a 1969 camaro it was his only car,he bought it new,so almost everything the car came with is still there except the engine, the car has has a 307 engine. i was told that it had came with a 327 engine.anyways i have no knowledge about cars,i am a member of the v.f.w. and the guys all remember buying cars after vietnam.like goats, barracudas, super bees, whats with all the animal names? anyways i need to keep it running so i can drive it in the local parades with members of the v.f.w. most of our members have serious injuries so they cant help with the car, this is where you guys come in. i will ask a ton of questions. some will be very simple for you, but for me it will be very hard.i can follow directions and take instruction.that being said where should i start? do i need a book, should i subscribe to a magazine? what are some basic tools do i need to maintain the car.and please keep in mind i have 4 kids so i dont have a ton of money, thanks
whatthe?

You brought up one of the best places to start: buy a book.

Specifically a shop manual on the car. I don't know if there would be a Haynes manual or even the original chevy shop manual, but just searching in Google for "1969 Camaro shop manual" or something to that effect should bring up information about one of these books. They are essentially complete rebuilds of a car, documented and photographed, from changing light bulbs to pulling the engine. One of those is almost always the best place to start when looking at working on a car that is reasonably complete.
