New HEI distributor but no spark.

Hi all,

I have a 1969 Camaro with a 1978 Corvette L82 350. I installed a tach but the old cap had no tach hookup so I installed a new cap and rotor. I tried to start the engine but it wouldn't fire. I checked for spark but I wasn't getting any.

To make a long story short, I installed a new distributor (which came complete with cap and rotor) and when I tried to start it this time it backfired up through the carb like it was out of time so I thought I had fixed the spark problem. But I tried to start it again but it wouldn't do anything but crank over. I tried several times and checked for spark again but I didn't have any.

All of the components of the distributor check out with an ohm meter and I have a keyed 12v wire hooked up to the BATT side of the distributor.

Any ideas as to what I could try next?

Thanks!

Probably a far shot, but I had that exact same thing happen a week ago with an hei distributor. Turns out the tach wire had rubbed against some metal and was grounding out. So I would try removing the tach wire and just having the 12v hooked up. Like I said, its probably a far shot but that's one less thing that could be the problem. Good luck my friend.

In the years of wrenching I have done, there has been two or three cars that have had ignition problems due to a bad tachometer. Try disconnecting the tach and see if it starts . if it does, plug in the tach and see if the motor shuts off. That should narrow it down some.

Thanks. Unfortunately I never got around to actually hooking up the tach because of the other problems.
