New Ice Cream Truck

so we buy a ice cream truck today, its in elk grove , ca. and we need to get it to where we live, in diamond springs, like 3 hrs driving that thing. anyway, i guess the old ice cream truck was used to driving right around 5 to 10 mph, cuzz after a hour or so at 30 mph, the rear end starts making a horrible growling sound. i mean HORRIBLE sound. pretty soon, i smell a rotten smoke smell, and the HORRIBLE sounds get REALLY LOUD. them BAM, tires lock up following what sounded like a BOMB going off under the poor thing. so as im skidding to a halt to the side of the freeway, i feel a little better about talking the guy down 700$!!!!!!!!!!i get out, and look at the engine first, which is fine, then the rear end, which has smoke rolling off of it from all angles. long story short, we cant get a tow PERIOD, so the only thing left to do, is rev it to the limit, then slam her into drive and see what happens BOOM!!! the truck starts moving!!! ( were like 5 miles form my house ) so the rest of the way there, i get stares from everyone as the truck is now emitting screeching metal on metal sonic blasts. but finnally we got it home, now i need a diff rear end

Just curious - What was the grease level in the rear end before you left?

ice cream

well, i threw it out there to my wife, putting in my pumped up 454 thats almost done, she just laughed. funny, though, i kinda thought by tapping its rear end, it sure did sound hollow, like nothing in it. anyway, i guess ill know in a day or two when i rip it out. also, i got a lame 10 bolt, it IS a 12 bolt in the truck currently, the u joint and everything will still fit right? i know the 10 bolt is garbage, but this thing is only expected to do 5 to 10 mph anyway, so it should be right up that 10 bolt alley

I was surprised you just kept rolling after you heard all the rear-end noise! I generally interpret noises like that as the car saying: "this is your fair warning that I'm going to do something pretty awful in the near future."

Anyway, glad you're ok. I think your 10 bolt should be fine for what little stress it will be under. Seems, though, that regular maintenance on this thing is a bit lacking... wonder when the last time the other fluids were changed?

Rerouting Cooling

Maybe You Could Have Rerouted The Cold Air From One Of The Frezzers To Cool The Rear End. Ha Ha!

no options

i pretty much didnt have a choice in continueing going on. i mean, i couldnt get a tow because it wasent on the insurance yet, i was broke, cuzz i just bought it, so paying for a tow outright wasent a option, and i was like 5 miles from home., so i just floored it and slammed it into drive! it broke loose, and man, talk about noise! i never knew a rear end could make such a racket, i mean, i know how much i was gonna have to spend on a rear end, i knew it was a cake job for me to swap and i knew mine was a gonner anyway., so i figured, go for it, long as it got me home

Drop in a small block, install a killer sound system, lower it 2 inches front and rear, after market chrome wheels with 50`s series low profile raised white letter tires, dual exhaust with flame throwers, then you have the ultimate ice cream truck that not only serves the best ice cream but plays the role as well.

yeah, itd be bad, i am looking at lowering it and stuff, but the engine thats in it now is all it needs to crawl around town, plus that way it keeps my overhead low ( gas ) but i am thinking about painting it the twisted metal clown on the sides ( like the ps2 game! ) kids can still relate i think. make it look like the truck in the game. i didnt want to paint it, i know how much work is involved, and i tried and tried to tell the wife something that big, with that much metal with 10 15 20 who knows how many diff coats of paint, well, its a LONG road.( it didnt look too bad when we got it actually ) but she wouldnt have NONE of it. so, 15 hrs later, with me and her and the kids ( sometimes ) one SIDE is bare metal. we got a freind who paints for a living cut us a deal, but we got to do the prep.

Funny coincidence, I am reading this thread, and low on behold, the music from a Ice Cream Truck fills my ears. LOL True Story, I have not heard this music in the last year.

thats funny! mine gots a music box, a HUGE freezer, looks really cool, i got a distributor nearby ( a lady my wife and i grew up with ) but with the cold season comming, i may hold off on the license until feb or so....we got one with a hot dog cart and it was a good amount of $ for them to come and check your rig out. then renew the buissness license, insurance ect. 500$ worth of product to start, it adds up.
