New Project - 1965 Olds 442

Hi, I'm looking for some info on firstgen 442's. I just drug home a new project, a '65 Olds 442 post 4-speed car like one I owned years ago, except this one is a tad worse for wear than my old one was, but is saveable. A 400 motor came with the deal and an automatic tranny, also got a 455 which I may use. I also got a '65 442 hardtop body which will serve as a donor car. The floor in the coupe is good, will need a trunk pan, which IS being repro'ed, but I'm also needing patch panels for the rear quarters. Is anyone repro-ing those, or will other GM panels work? Does anyone know of a web site that handles parts for the early cars? I find sites for the later 442's but not much for 65's. Would appreciate any help.

Congrats. Unfortunately, as you've found, exterior sheet metal patch panels for the 64-65 cars is virtually nonexistent. You can get everything that is common with the Chevelle (floor pans, trunk pan, braces, rockers, and a patch panel for the base of the windshield). Panels for the bottoms of the fenders are unfortunately not reproduced and nothing else fits. The good news is that the chassis and suspension are the same for 64-67. Trim pieces and emblems are available from the Olds specialty houses like Fusick and Supercars Unlimited. There are a number of people with 64-65 cars at www.classicoldsmobile.com.

New Project - 1965 Olds 442

Thanks for the response. I was afraid that no one was reproducing patch panels, but hoped that a Chevelle panel might work. Maybe by hunting salvage yards locally, I might be able to come up with a F85 panel that will work but, of course, the problem there is finding one that is any better than what I have. I 'spect I'll probably end up rolling a piece of sheet metal and making a patch panel. Also, thanks for the heads-up on the Olds site. Maybe some of those guys have some ideas. I've attached a pic of the car and a closeup of one of the quarter panels. As you can see, she's no cherry, but I just finished a '40 Chevy coupe that was worse than this thing is, so there is hope!!! Thanks.

Fortunately, the shape of those quarters is pretty basic, so hand-forming isn't out of the question. I have exactly the same problem with my 1964 Olds Jetstar 88 convertible. The only option for patch panels is a donor car, and I have yet to find one that is cheap enough to cut up that isn't rusted the same way. From the photos, it looks like door hinge pins and bushings are also on the to-do list.

A buddy in our club has a metal roller, so forming a piece of sheet steel shouldn't be too big a task, using the old panel for a template. Most of the quarter is solid except for about 4-5 inches at the bottom.....and I could make the joint under the chrome strip.

Yeah, the driver's door's got a bit of sagittis. The donor car's doors fit and shut really well for as rusted the rest of the car is, but I'll probably replace the hinge pins and bushings.........if I can find them. If they are the same as a Chevelle, they are being repro'ed, I'd guess.

All the 64-67 A-body door hinges interchange, so that should be no problem.
