New Site Feature: Project Journals

I'm pleased to announce a brand-new section of Hotrodders.com: Hotrodders Project Journals.

Our new Project Journals will allow you to easily document your current hotrodding projects, by uploading photos and information as your project progresses. Your entries will be automatically dated and organized into web pages, and other members can leave comments on your journal entries.

Thanks go out to Kevin45, who got the ball rolling on this one. Thanks too to our beta testers (Bluepen, gt2betubbed, Centerline, Magnus_Jager, 38 special, Barz51, Carbed95GT, troy-curt), who made sure the Journals were ready to release to the entire board. This idea has been tossed around the board before, so I'm sure I missed a few people -- thanks to all .

We'll also be changing our Project of the Week format. We noticed that not many members have dozens of photographs and pages of information on their projects -- enough for a Project of the Week feature. Now that we've built a tool to help people document their projects, we should have plenty of home-built and low-buck tech. Since members can leave comments on each journal entry, we'll no longer need our Project of the Week forum. The POTW forum is no longer visible on the board, but I've saved all of the threads from that forum "just in case".

We'll be honoring the coolest and best-documented Journal projects in our Project Archives section, which includes all previous Project of the Week features, as well as two new projects: TurboS10's Chevy S-10 Pickup, and 1950bulletnose's 1950 Studebaker Champion. You can see the Project Archives section, with the 2 new projects, at this link.

The Hotrodders Project Journals have been designed to be very easy-to-use. If you can make posts on the board, then starting your own Project Journal should be no problem.

Do keep in mind that the Journal software is home-built, and brand-new. We can probably expect some minor glitches and bugs as we get the software completely ironed out. If you need a hand with anything, just place a post in the Site Suggestions and Help forum, and I'll be there to help you out.

No Larry It is a good thing

I really like this idea because it seems like every weekend I have a 1/2 dozen pics to show my progress.

Later,

Great going Jon - and beta testers. Now to make this thing REALLY fly everybody on the board should be thinking "project shots" every day when they head for the garage to tackle something new. And when they are done they should be uploading gobs of material.

In addition to "total projects" (the build up of a car from beginning to end) I think what would be really helpful is a ton of "mini projects". This would be virtually anything you do to your car to repair or improve it (mechanically or appearance wise). For example, I just finished replacing the steering column bearing on my '32 and then repairing a broken turn signal canceling mechanism. While these may be old hat fixes for lots of folks at HR.Com - I know I sure would have appreciated seeing some pics and descriptions before I jumped into the project. And from now on I'm going to try to keep the camera handy to document almost everything I do - and hopefully a couple hundred others on this list will be doing the same.

One final note. To make this section even more helpful I think we need to be very careful and very accurate about naming these "mini" projects. A title like "Look what I did today" isn't going to help much. On the other hand "Repairing Turn Signal Canceling Mechanism" tells me right away what this is about - and 2 or 3 years from now somebody using the search feature can get right to the appropriate project journal.

Can you only upload ONE project or will it be possible to record like 4 projects at a time?

For now, each member gets one journal. You can use this as a running log of all your projects, and, down the line, this may include many different cars/projects. Months or years from now, we may have some members whose journals span several projects.

If you are working on several different projects at the SAME TIME, you will probably need multiple journals. What you can do is sign up another username, like Nightfire2, or whatever, and then get a completely separate journal for that username.
