new site: HomemadeTools.net -- 1,000+ homemade tools
I just opened the doors on our new website: HomemadeTools.net.
HomemadeTools.net is an online community for builders of homemade tools. It includes a forum for discussing homemade tools and related topics, and a categorized directory of homemade tools from around the web, with 1,052 homemade tools currently listed (and thousands more queued for insertion). HomemadeTools.net was inspired by a long homemade tools thread on Hotrodders.com. We've all seen these threads on this forum, and many others. They're extremely valuable resources, but the signal-to-noise ratio is not ideal, and they can stretch to 100 pages or more. More importantly, the valuable tool postings deserve a more formalized and permanent means of presentation. HomemadeTools.net organizes and indexes each individual homemade tool from homemade tool discussions from around the web, as well as websites and webpages featuring homemade tools. And, tools that you post on the HomemadeTools.net forums get automatically added to the HomemadeTools.net directory of homemade tools: categorized, described, titled, tagged, and credited to your username. I think this is a rock-solid concept, but, of course, this is a brand-new site, in beta, so I'm expecting it can be advanced significantly, largely through user feedback. If you have ideas or constructive criticism for HomemadeTools.net, or if you know of a stash of unlisted homemade tools in a forum or elsewhere on the web, please don't be shy. Links: Some of the larger top-level categories: Automotive, Cutting, Jacks and Lifts, Measuring and Marking, Media Blasting, Metalworking, Miscellaneous, Storage and Organization, Woodworking, Workholding. Some popular tags: bead roller, engine, English wheel, jig, lathe, press, rotisserie, sheetmetal, stand, vise-grips. Forums: HomemadeTools.net Forums

Cool site, I'll have to go through and get some ideas
![]() And I have a few homemade tools that I'll have to get pictures of and put up. Here's one I did a few years ago, a homemade treadle lathe for shaping the outside of the thrust duct for the radio controlled hovercraft I built... Thanks guys -- very excited about this new site.
zbhover -- that reminds me: we also have a YouTube channel with 195 homemade tool videos, categorized into 30+ playlists. I've just added your video to the channel, in the main Homemade Tools playlist. Here's a Homemade Tools playlist example: 15 Homemade Media Blaster Videos.

Excellent idea! Since it is a separate site, I assume we will register separately on that site?

A few questions/suggestions. Are there any plans to include: - an "Introduce Yourself" and a "Website Suggestions and Help" forum? - perhaps a "Classifieds" sections for the tools? Or would they be referred to the "Classifieds" on this site? - a visible link to this site under the "Garage-Tools" section, kind of the like the link to the "Modern Electronic Engines" sub-forum? Aside from that, any concerns about spamming or advertising from tool businesses? |

lt1silverhawk -- yes, Intro and Suggestions forums will be added (I wanted to keep the forum layout simple when the site launched). Classifieds can be handled on HomemadeTools.net; possibly in a designated forum. And yes, I'll be linking up HomemadeTools.net in various spots around Hotrodders.com; in Garage-Tools is a good idea. As for tool businesses trying to sneak in some advertising, I'm sure we'll see some of it, but the forum will be moderated such that their impact is minimized.
---- Thanks to Cobalt327 for the first homemade tool posted in the HomemadeTools.net forums! -- Adjustable Push Rod Length Checker. It's been titled, tagged, described, and categorized into the Homemade Engine Tools category.
