New TH 400 slow into drive and reverse

Have a quick question on my sons TH 400. Recently rebuilt at a reputable shop and has been fine for about 600 miles. He took a trip to the snow country yesterday and started having problems. Takes about 5 seconds to go into drive or reverse. Supposedly, everything was changed, along with a new 12" converter. The warmer the trans gets, the worse the wait is. Any ideas please? Thanks

Mark

Cool

MAjor pressure loss.

possible pump gear eating away metal.

Sealing ring(s) broken , crushed if teflon

Since engagement in drive and reverse are bad when hot , I would look at a main line pressure problem.

have you had a 0-300 psi guage on it to check the pressures?

Did you remove any 'unused' switches from the valve body and not plug the hole?

Hi Crosley..

We haven't done any checking yet as it seems to be ok now. I drove it yesterday and it was fine for me. We cked the fluid and it doesn't smell burned and is red and no metal. I know the shop put in some sort of shift improver kit, but don't know which one.

My son is going to monitor it close and see how it goes, but my suspecion is that something is wrong. It also made a weird, very high pitch squeeling noise for the first few weeks, but that has stopped. I could hear it and I have bad hearing! LOL It kinda sounded like a ultra high pitch whistle comming from inside the tranny. Park or in gear didn't matter.

Oops... just asked my son and he said that while he was having problems up in the snow, that the whistling noise was there for a while, but is gone now. Seems to be worse when it warms up after driving.

Is it possible that one or more of the rings on the stator are bad and bypassing fluid and making the whistling noise?

Guess it could be lots of things. Just hate to have to pull it out again if they want it back. We carried it in originally to have it done and I doubt they'll pull it for us to ck it over.
