this is just a general video on the topic but in episode 43 I get my hands dirty and show the tricks of the trade. Watching this in combination with episode 43 will give you a good heads up on panel alignment. Enjoy.

Good stuff Henry. I am still amazed at what someone will spend on a car! That guy will probably have close to six figures in that car I am assuming, just who has that kind of money? It's wild, wealth fascinates me.

He's also got a matching bicycle sprayed as well. I heard the frame alone was $20k and they also had to fab up some channels on the bottom side just to get it fit. I mean who and the hell spends 20k on just a frame for an Impala? Crazy, just crazy.

With all that money spent you'd figure they'd give us a quarter patch that was better than the one we got... man, that thing had relief cuts from tin snips it was so bad. :)

That's what I mean, I like to ask myself "How much would I have to earn to justify that"? Often that number I come up with (In this case I would have to be bringing in a quarter a mil a year) would I have to make to justify such a toy? And that number is OFTEN much more than the guy makes. It's also a trip to think that you doing what you do can't afford to pay someone to do what you do! That's a weird thought that I had years ago when I was in a restoration shop. I mean, there is NO WAY at that time I could have paid someone to do what I did every day. So my home projects were pretty sacred to me, you know what I mean?

yeah, most guys building don't think of the dollar amount. That's something for the owners and car owners to fuss about. I see myself putting in more money than my measly 6 banger mustang will ever be worth but it's the joy of cruising that does it for me. So I grow kind of fond of guys who will spend a lot of money on their restos when they fully know that the car itself will never be worth half of what's put into it.

When a porta power is used in the rear section to level the body with the deck lid, how much concern is there to alter the quarter panel, body lines or any part of the quarter section?

There's a lot of wrestling you can do with a car and to some it could look hack but if you figure out why something is out of alignment and address it you're not only fixing the problem but you wont have to worry about having to use filler to alter things to make it look normal. You're just using filler to make it sharper, not altering. Another example is using a spoon dolly to bring edges out. You never want to just go, "ok, I need to spoon this edge out and we're good to go." What you want to do is use your options and get it fitting the best you possibly can and then you use the spoon as a last resort. This will always leave you less to spoon out and if you're good enough no problems will ever arrise like high edges or taking something out of it's natural shape cause you have figured out why it's not aligning before just diving in. So if you do a lot of things in their proper order you are increasing your chances of success. In any case, there are times where you have to do something and take it out of it's natural shape, but even that is a judgement call. If the door doesn't fit to an area of the quarter but the door looks straight in that area you go for the quarter, or maybe a little of both. What you don't want to do is make an edge look crooked to fix something. So anything you cheat is looked at with a close observation as to not make anything jump out at you. It all has to be undetectable. This is what All restoration shops do, if they say they don't they're full of chit or they just don't really perfect the alignment. You gotta remember, when you're aligning panels better than they did in factory, you're gonna have to cheat somewhere, the key tis to know where.

Cool man, you reinforce what I have been doing which helps me feel confident in my work/repairs. Body alignment sure seems to require that finesse. Now if I could just get some more experience right away I will be set :)

keep an eye out for episode 43, it goes into greater detail about panel alignment and shows me actually doing it. Should be uploading it by next Friday.
