new vs used intakes

My husband is fairly new at building up motors and we have an edelbrock intake on one of our trucks and really like it. We are wanting to replace the intakes on our other trucks, 350 and 454 and our car, which he is building a 305 for. We are also in the process of swapping out our stock quadrajets for edelbrock carbs so if we don't go with the different intakes we have to use an adapter.

I have been looking at used intakes on ebay and also new ones at AJ-USA. If there is no damage, cracks or stripped holes, in the intake is it worth buying a used one and save a few bucks or should I buy new ones? Is there anything else to go wrong with an intake other than cracks or stripped holes? Do they wear out or warp after a period of time? Sorry for such a stupid question but all he has ever done is built engines back to stock with the cheap kits on Northern Auto and although they run, he wants to build them better than stock now.

Thank you.

I have seen aluminum intakes warped because someone did not use the proper torque sequence.

I have noticed a wide variance in the shipping from $11 to 35. The intake I was looking at in AJ's was $120 sbc and $175 bbc, so I was figuring a used one for no more than $75 sbc and $100 bbc including shipping, does this sound reasonable or are they worth more or less? We have three carbs left to replace and we already have a weiand intake for one of those and we have one adapter plate that we are getting ready to put on the bb until we get an intake for it. We would eventually like to put the adapter in the garage so that when we buy a vehicle we can use the adapter for a while instead of having to buy the carb and intake at the same time.

Do you think it would be a risk to buy one sight unseen? If it is warped is there a way to tell before we put it in the truck?

a used intake is every bit as good as a new one as long as there is no carnage done to it.

Well, you'd have to hope it is in good shape, not warped or cracked. Plus, watch the shipping like they've been saying above. On eBay, shipping is where a lot of them make their profit.

I bidded and won a Polished Weiand Stealth manifold a month ago.
Came cracked by one of the bolt holes. Slightly warped too. Fortunately, the eBayer refunded my money promply.

So, I am not sure I will go that route again.

We have decided to buy new ones rather than risk it. Thank you all.

A used car is as good as a new car, as long as it has never been driven....
