Steve 35 Ford I would keep drums. Put rear disc on my 35 ford and definitely not worth the expense and hassle. Heck bought kit but had to design my own rear brackets. Doesn't stop that much better than drums. If buy rear brake disc kit buy one with complete kit including drum emergency brake incorporated in rotor. Caddy caliper with e brake hard to adjust and not work well.

I agree with Enjenjo that the drums aren't moving if properly tightened. If you think they are, I would take a paint marker and mark them and check when you hear the sound. Also does it make a noise if you are moving in reverse? This could also be checked with the paint to see if anything is shifting after braking in that direction. I would be more apt to believe that it is something in the rear housing when it has a load on it than in the brake area.

yknot I would not worry about the current bolt pattern....If you want to convert to a rear disc brake set-up, then just switch. Wilwood makes a great rear disc set-up that includes the emergency parking brake, and you can run either the 5 on 4-1/2 Ford patteren or the 5 on 4-3/4 pattern for the chevy's. The kit is very inclusive and simply bolts in, regurad less of your axles pattern. You simply have to know the type of ends your Ford Housing has, there are currently three different type they can be. See the wilwood site for how to determine the correct housing ends you have.

That said, it is unlikely that the drums can move if the wheels are tightened properly, I would be looking for a bent rim, or a defective tire.

pitts64 I would keep the rear drums and work from there....If you need more rear braking install 11" rear brakes..I don't think you would need them though. The front disc rear drum set up is an excellent braking system....

NAPA sells excellent drums. I always have mine turned even when new..

streetrodderbn as long as the axles were re drilled safely with the correct bolt pattern you need, I'd just get another pair of drums and have them re drilled at a reputable machine shop, or even take your existing drums to a machine shop to see if they can be safely re drilled to properly fit the bolt circle. I have seen both rotors and drums plug welded and re drilled with no problems, it is the safety issue that warrants a certified welder or reputable machine shop for re drilling!!

rear disc brake conversion

Building a 32 3W coupe. Running a Ford 9in with Ford drum brakes. The axles have the GM bolt pattern(5on4 3/4). Why?? Hell if I know. That's the way it came. My brake drums were hogged out to fit that bolt pattern. I get a thumping sound when I drive the car that I don't get when it is on jack stands. I'm thinking it's those brake drums sliding on the bolts when the weight of the car is on the ground. Can I retrofit either GM brake drums or convert to disc brakes without changing the axles?
