$10 is DIRT cheap for a core. That is less than scrap value even at today's depressed scrap prices.
When I sell TH350 cores, my prices start at $75 each and go up depending on which one it is and how good I think it is. High end for a 1978-1979 4x4 in SEEMINGLY decent condition would be around $400.
TH400s start at $100 and go up from there to around $400 or so for an original 1964 Cadillac TH400.
Those prices are for UNINSPECTED cores AS IS. What you see is what you get.
currently i have an 86 truck 700r4 and a 78 truck th350 both complete and need rebuilt
how do i sell them as cores?
we dont have such places around here in central IL
we always send them to the shredder for 75 a ton
i have junked probably over 200 trannies over the years some good some not, because theres nothing else to do with them here
i end up with all kinds of them, FWD ones also commonly, because we do trans replacement for ppl often. we get them good used ones from the yards and put them in and end up with their old trannies and i always save them up for the shredder
You are correct. There is no one in your area that buys cores for parts. Nearest place most likely is Chicago, but I have no idea who does, if anyone.
The places that I know about are in Dallas, Texas; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Kansas City, Kansas; Soucie, Mississippi; Louisville, Kentucky; Hamlin, Iowa; and several further away. I am in Oregon, so unless you drive here on vacation, it is not cost-effective to sell them to me.
Your best bet is to contact your local transmission shops. Often they will buy cores that they know they will need in the future. If nothing else, let them know that you usually have a bunch on hand so if they suddenly need one they will check with you first.
Front wheel drive cores generally have no core value. Too many subtle varieties and too short of a demand window.
Truck transmissions tend to be in constant demand, so those are the only ones I would save from the shredder.
Standard transmissions are almost impossible to sell as cores. Very few companies (maybe a dozen or so) nationwide that have any interest in standards. Usually the large cities (over a million people) have ONE local rebuilder (operating out of his home garage) that does only standards, but they don't buy nor sell out of their local area.

I have probably personally ripped apart over 100,000 transmissions over the last 25 years. And have probably owned another 250,000 or so that others have ripped apart or that I sold as cores. At one time I was selling 30 tons of scrap iron from transmissions every month. That is about 800 transmissions per month across the ripping table for one ripper.
Today I am only buying about 200 per month and selling most of them as is to others. Only about 40 per month are now crossing the ripping bench.
If my rebuild goes well I was thinking of rebuilding the others to sell. I'm just not sure if I want the liability of it. I just like to tinker with things and don't really have time to deal with a unhappy customer. I was thinking ebay but I don't know how much of a pain it is to ship these things.

Find vehicles that have the same bad transmissions in them and install yours. Then sell. You can find vehicles with bad transmissions cheaply and can sell them near to book value once fixed. With trucks you could easily make $1000 or more for your rebuild after all costs.
Of course, then you will have another bad transmission to fix. So repeat until you finally get a transmission so bad it can't be fixed.
