Question about repairing a spraying mistake

OK... I have a question for you more experienced painters than I, which is most of you. I had a mishap in the booth last night and I am not sure I took the best approach to recovery. First a little background. I am using PPG Global products. Envirobase waterborne matalic base and glamor clear. I use a different gun for my primers and sealers but the same gun (Finish Line 3) for the base and clear because I am too cheap to go buy another gun for my clear.

OK... So I finish shooting the sealer and base last night. I am cleaning up the Finish Line gun really good (in the booth because I don't have any where else to do this) and I usually spray a little gun cleaner through the gun as I am cleaning. Then hold a rag up to the tip to blow a little air back through the cup to ensure it is clean. I usually do the with the cup lid on, but do to a brain fart last night I had the cup lid off. You guessed it... gun cleaner shot out of the cup and splashed all over my newly BC'ed fuel tank cover. I was pissed. If I had a separate gun for base it would not have been such a big deal, but now the gun I just cleaned for clear had to spray BC again. :pain: The result of the splash were some spots where the color just looked off, but the real kicker was there were some other spots that looked like they had gun cleaner wet drops on them that soaked up the BC and were still wet and much higher then area around it.

The discoloration I could just spray over but I didn't know what to do about the drops of wet gun cleaner siting there soaking up BC. I tried to take the corner of a shop towel with tweezers and soak up the droplets but this created craters in the BC. I tried to spray over these with more base but they would not level.

I wound up taking a shop towel and dousing it with the deionized water (water born reducer) and wiping the entire base coat off and respraying it. This worked because it is a fairly small part. If this had been the body... what should I had done? What for it to dry, sand it flat and rebase? Any other tricks to deal with something like this (other than clean the gun outside the booth)?

Thanks!

hey mate **** happens !!!!!!!!!!!!

never realy delt with water based but had it been solvent just sand base problem area with 800 then tack town and re base

Yep.... I thought about that. But that would have meant waiting until I was done clearing everything else in the booth. Then take it out, sand it prep it and respray. I was really looking for tricks to save it while still in the booth. What I did worked, but I just don't know if it was the easiest recovery.
