|unstable||thank you gentlemen. As dumb as this may sound...I'm trying to cobble together a SS pickup truck...they are going for around $10,000 and the driveline is just a 454 (230hp) mated with a TH400 and 3.73 gears in the rear...bilstein shocks, bucket seats, the SS logos etc. I just snagged an 89 1 ton with 454 / TH400...I'd just like to turn it into a fun truck to drive around town without getting TOO ambitious. i've gotten TOO ambitious before and ended up with a truck that was in 1000 pieces.|

|big gear head||If this is an older GM rear end then there will be a code stamped into the right axle tube on the front side close to the center. If it's a Camaro rear end then go to a Camaro web sight and check the codes. If it's a Chevelle rear end then do the same on a Chevelle web sight. This code will tell you what the original gears were and what differential it had, but that might not be what is in it now.|

|matt167||depending on the axle, it might have the ratio stamped into 1 of the axle tubes.. beyond that, you can open up the rear and count the gears... axle code is on a information tag in the glove box or on the door. but then if the rear has been changed, you don't know what it is w/o checking|

I'm wondering if there is a means of identifying the gears in a Chevy/GM rear-end based on VIN or something. I've heard of the old trick of jacking up the rear and rotating the wheels or something but that doesn't seem like it would be all that precise and it's kind of a pain in the butt compared to running some codes (if this is possible).
