staleg I have a chevy small block in my '34. Front suspension is a Fat Man M II.

I decided to move the engine up a bit compared to what the engine mount welding sheet suggested. Moved it enough to make the front crossmemeber the lowest point.
I personally think that's more important than if I have to use 2-3 or more universal joints on the steering linkage.

When I moved the engine up, the transmission cover for the 6 speed trans had to be made rather huge. So now it will be very limited space for all those 3 pedals...

But then again, limited space is what hot rod building is all about I guess.

alittle1 The rack is mounted to the front of the cross member. The steering column is mounted to the firewall and floor of the body. Once these two components are mounted they do not move. You then make up the distance between them by using universal joints, shaft and hangers. You do not want more than three universals in the arrangement without using a hanger to steady the shaft. You have a choice of making this configuration up by using double D, spline shaft or round stock, the choice is yours.

If you use a wedge shim behind the bottom mounting holes that bolt the rack to the front cross member, you can lean the top of the gear box shaft back to clear the motor mount. This angle will always be constant and will never change.

If you are boxing the frame, you can weld a mount anywhere on to the inside boxing material. Motor mounts can be fabricated to go over or under the steering shaft. Nothing is standard in hot rodding. Make sure to gusset your mounts, this will add rigidity to the mounts.

In most cases the rack on the IFS can be angle shimmed back so the shaft going to the column will lay back down below the motor mount. If you require more room at the mount, you can grind out what you need to clearance the shaft and weld a supporting bridge to strengthen the mount. So what I am saying is, the shaft can go over, under or through the motor mount if it has to.

The floor panels of a 34 can be modified to accept a 200R4 if need be. If it is a glass car, which most buildups are now, a few cuts, some cloth and resin will get it done.

Or a combination of lowering the engine and raising the floor panels somewhat, will also get you there too. The choice is yours.

lamothe1 I'm using a mustang 11 IFS with the rack in front of the crossmember, so he angle of the shaft would be different than your '32 dropped axle. I wish I had the IFS installed. It would be easy to see where it goes, but I would like to scribe a mark on the frame where the mounts go than I could pull off the body and weld in the boxing plates, rear coil over mounts IFS and the mounts without taking off and putting on the body too many times

Deuce I built a 1932 Ford frame for a friend and we lowered the SBC a little below the top of the frame rail. It made the steering column to steering box ( a Vega ) difficult. It also made the oil pan lower and the guy who owns the 32 ... says it scrapes a lot and has replaced the pan twice ( leaking ).



This is my 1932 3W chassis ... and the engine mounts are level with the top of the frame. IF the engine was lower ... the exhaust would rub the steering IMHO





You can see the engine mounts and the relationship of the steering shaft to the frame/steering rack mount. If I lowered the steering column lower mounting position at the floor board ... it would make the steering column be at a weird angle in the coupe.

OneMoreTime On my project car I am getting the chassis done complete so it is a roller then setting the engine in place and that will tell the tale on the motor mount deal..i will have my steering linkage in as well so when I set the motor in I will see just where I am at on clearance issues...

I'm starting to put a 350 chevy small block in my '34 ford. I'm going to install a Heidts mustang ll IFS and side motor mounts. Right now i'm trying to figure out where to locate the motor mounts. it seams the cars I've looked at have the mounts kinda flush with the top of the frame rail. I would like to lower them about 1" as the trans (200r4) would fit better. If I lower the mount will it be more of a interference problem to get the steering connected from the steering column to the rack and pinion which is the forward mount type and does the linkage go over or under the mount?
