Ok, heres the scoop. I just recently aquired an 86 Chevy C20. I was told the tuck had a 350 in it, however a check of the vin reveals that in fact, the truck should have a 305 in it. When I questioned the person who gave me the truck, she said thats what her husband told her it had. Why don't I ask the husband you ask?...Because he died and that is the whole reason the woman was selling the truck. She is about 80 years old and not much of an engine expert.
Anyhow, how do I figure out which engine is in my truck? Where can I find the markings on the engine that will tell me what I have and where can I go to find out what those markings mean?
Any help would be appreciated....Thank you. <img src="graemlins/crash.gif" border="0" alt="[crash]" />
Look on the left rear bank (just in front of your bellhousing on the block behind head) it should read 5.0 G (305) or 5.7 G (350) (G means gasoline I believe). I have noticed that a lot of 305's have "305" in raised letters just in front of the left motor mount on the side of the block. (might be easier to see)

Thanks, when I get the truck back from the exhaust shop, I will check and let you know. Because my follow up questions are going to determine how I proceed to clean up that engine and breath new life into it.
My 2 pennies is ....check the VIN number, use to codes to varify the original configuration of the build of your vehicle.
I just went down reciently to my local chevy dealership, and had 2 keys cut from the VIN number that was used to get the Key Codes from GMC, my other keys were worn right out, and couldn't get a good cut from the originals, but was able to use VIN number to get specs.
I am also having a hard time finding what year and HP that I have in a Chevy engine I bought and was only told it was a 350 Truck engine.
I can't find those markings on my truck engine.
What I do find there is letters GM and 3970010
On the block on the passenger side in front of the head on the tab I find the numbers T6F73830 and VO615TKB.
Can anyone please tell me the year and HP
Thanks,
aralph
