AutoGear Look for a trans with a 1st gear in something like a 2.98, 2.88 or 2.64 and a rear axle of around 3.23:1. This is assuming NO overdrive

tranny

I do not like the granny 4sp,and I will not be towing a trailer.looking for good milage at highway speeds, and not have a very low 1st gear like the granny.

AutoGear Indy shifter (made by 'hurst' now B&M) for your 3spd
Change to a different ratio 3spd
Convert to a 5spd T5 trans
Muncie/T10/Saginaw 4spd

richard stewart 3rd Hi
You could look for a 3speed W/OD or a Saginaw 4 speed.(no granny)
Floor shifter required for the 4 speed(in that vehicle) As for the three speed, Hurst has floor shifters for them. Hurst called them mystery shifters. As it was surely a mystery as to weather you'd get the next gear or not. (the nut at the bottom of the shifter would get loose & you'd loose that race)
