Rebuilt 350 oil pressure woes...

hey all...new to the forum cuz i was searching oil pressure woes...

I had a 350 rebuilt and received it as a short block. New high volume pump etc.

It has a remote filter and i'm priming it with a modified distributor.

After 2 X 20 minute attempts, spinning the pump extension shaft clockwise, I'm not getting any oil to the OPSU or top end at all, it is getting a tonne of pressure at the filter (i pulled filter and gave the drill a spin).

I dropped a welding rod into the opsu passage to see if that plug was in there. I read that if you measure 8.5" or less, plug is in. I got 8.5 exactly.

I'm scratching my head here...any ideas?

What are you using for a priming tool if its just a shaft that maybe the problem, You need a dist. with the gear ground off if not you are dumping oil where the dist. goes.

If you leave the plug out uner the main cap it will not cause a oil pressure problem the oil just bypasses the oil filter.

I got a junk dist, took the 'gear' off the end, put it in a lathe and took the helical teeth off so that it won't turn the cam. Its modified distributor...and its not getting wet in the least either.

I can feel the resistance of the pump when i spin it with the drill, oil shot out the filter line when i yanked the filter.

It needs to spin the pump pretty quick. If it's a HYD cammed engine, spin I over once after you run the primer for a while. This will get the lifters to change position on the lobe and allow them topinkp up. Oil restrictors also could cause long prime times initially.
