Bryan59ec,
I had falcon, mustang and Comet. I have a air for 65' Caliente, all restore. I have a overdrive for 1960 falcon to 1964, mostly those 6 inline, some use a small 298. The driveshaft is small, I have seen them, everyone want to pick a V eight. I had a 65 Ranchero, I sold it, the 200 cid with three on tree.
The overdrive can to change for F-100 to 240 or 300 and get better gas. I have alot of overdrives. What year of your model? The heater is the same of all meet. Mustang heaters the same.
My 65 Ranchero was purchased by my uncle new in 65.
He promptly installed a 3-spoke steering wheel and a set of original American Racing Torque Thrust mags.
Factory 289 HIGH PERFORMANCE with a 4-spd.
Pretty much unmolested except for the day 2 stuff----a real time capsule.
This thing is a little rocket and a blast to drive
Not the heater core I am looking to repair----already have that.
My issue is mainly sealing the box to the cowl where the air enters the heater.
Falcons used a big 'dryer hose' type seal-----Mustang used use a foam type seal.
The Falcon seal I cannot find at the Falcon suppliers-----the piece for the mustang is readily available.
I did find out that the heater boxes (the big fiberglass box) is the same from 60 to 65 in the Falcon-----65-66 Mustang----difference being the late 65 and the 66 cars had a hole cut in the box for a blower resistor for the 'new' 3 spd blower.
The heat/defrost plenum is a bit different, but I do not think there would be any issue with using one from an earlier Falcon or the Mustang.
I will find out very soon.
While in Atlanta this week, I visited Mustangs Unlimited and bought the heat/defrost plenum and a seal kit.
I intend on fixing my heater this weekend (dropping to the mid 30s overnight this week).
I'm curious as I have a 64 Falcon and the heater box became detached from the cowl which I assume led to some flexing and leaking in the heater core. All I know is that if I tried using the defroster I got a lot of steam on my windshield. As a quick temporary fix, I just removed the heater box and replumbed the heater hose to be just a loop.
Haven't even opened up the heater box yet to see if I can determine the problem with the heater core, which was supposed to have been new when I bought the car.
In any case I'll also need to reattach the heater box to the cowl and any tips or advice you have would be appreciated.
Found a heater box from an early mustang
Bought a new seal kit, heat defrost plenum from Mustangs unlimited.
The mustang must have a shorter distance from the cowl to the heater as
I had to use a new foam seal and stack an old used one on top of it.
Other than that the heaters are identical.
Earlier Falcons used a bigger heater core (60-63 was 2-1/2" thick and somewhere after that the cores were 2" thick.
Also----starting in April 65, Falcons and Mustangs got 3 speed heaters vs the earlier 2 spd (applies to the 64-65 cars).
The cars with the 3 speed heater will have a hole cut in the heater box for the blower resistor that the early 65 and 64 cars do not have.
If you replace the heater box (and they are available new from Falcon Enterprises, Mustangs unlimited, and Melvin's Classic Ford Parts , they will all use the same heater core---cannot recall which one.
I think I found that Melvin's carries the large dryer vent hose type seal, but I have not yet ordered one----I will later----now AI have to repair my defrost hoses and vents 'cause they broke while wrestling around with the heater.
Hoses and vents are also available new-----about $40.00
But--my heater is working now and I can actually drive it in the mornings if it not too humid out----defrost only halfway works.
