matts37chev I am pretty happy with what I ended up with, the new tires are tall enough that it doesnt look too ridiculous.
Here are the rears on the car

matts37chev I have spent the last couple weeks doing a bunch of homework and measuring.
Then today I spent a couple hours at the tire store having them mount up a few different size tires.
This evening I tried them all on the car.
Here is what I came up with, the newer size are a lot taller, raising the car off the ground while making it look lower, by filling the wheel well better.
plus this will help my hwy RPM (3.70:1 rear gears and a th350)

Fronts Old vs. New
195/70R14 vs. 245/45R17 (I might go a size taller)


Rears Old vs. New
235/70R15 vs. 255/55R18

Leakie Found it.... 29-54 CHEV Passenger Catalogue- If you look down the list of 37-38 parts they list a 2 inch wider front fender.

You are right Matt, when I was looking for my rear fenders I ran across a website that listed front fenders there were 2 inches wider. I could not understand why they would make the fronts wider too. I can not remember the name of the company but it was not Superior, that is were I got mine.

Too Many Projects Get both rear wheels off the ground, make a horizontal line on the drive shaft and a vertical line on the drums. Turn the shaft 1 revolution and count how many times the drums turn. Not exact science but will get a close idea of the ratio.

matts37chev I just picked up my 18x9 rear wheels yesterday, so I will test fit them tonight.
Next I need to install the cheapo little tach I got, to see how many RPMs I am actually spinning down the Hwy to help determine what size tire I really need.
It sounds like it's really wound up, but it may just be the lack of insulation and the flowmasters.

You may be right, I just tried looking it up and all I could find was the rears in +2".

Too Many Projects If you have fiberglass front fenders too, they should be the same dims as original. As far as I know, only the rears were made 2" wider...

I didn't care for tires that skinny so went to the 6" wheels and 215 tires.

The tires and wheels that are on the front of my car now are 14x6 with 3.25" ish back spacing.
You add 2" to the fenders, and that puts them tucked under there a long ways.
I also need to remember that my 38 has a different chassis.
(I don't know the track width on it)
So it's not a very comparison, when I am trying to figure this stuff out.

But when I get back to working on the 37 again, (w/stock frame rails) I can come back and look at this info.

I doubt more backspace would help. Here's a pic of the car when I got it. It had 185/65r15 tires on 15X4" wheels and they rubbed... As seen, they sat well inside the fender but rubbed on the front wheel opening at full turn.
