If the distributor is in the front you probably have a 3.8L Buick V6. It uses the BOP bolt pattern bellhousing. If you want to use a Chevy bolt pattern transmission behind the Buick V6 (or any BOP/Cad engine), use an adaptor like this.
As far as buying a reman 3.8L V6 to replace the one you have, I'd tend to lean towards a Chevy V8, but that's me.

|pricesgarages||if its never going to see a v8 keep the 200 tranny 79 is a non lock up they were weak but if it is rebuilt correctly it will give u good service its 45lbs lighter than a th350 and geared better but u need to to make sure the tv cable is corectly installed if you plan on a v8 swap go with a th350 id be willing to guess u have either a 2.41 or 2.73 rear gear ratio so u would be fine with a 3 spd auto|

I would go with the 200-4r OD. TH350 sized, has OD, and has a deep 1st, so you can take some of the burden off the lil 6er.
AFAIK the 200-4r was around in the mid 80s, not 79. It was most likely a 200 or 200c

1979 Monte Carlo questions
My son has a 1979 Monte Carlo. It has a 200 V6. 60 degree, distributor in front. Not sure of the trans. The car is a few hundred miles away.
Its pretty tired, over 190,000 miles on it. Its time for a new motor and trans, the motor has hardly any oil pressure at idle (light flickering) and the front trans seal is shot.
I was wondering who had the best Reman engines, planning to stay with the 200 for better milage. ART has a pretty good price on a long block. Planning to go with a aftermarket manifold, headers etc. Also wondering if anyone knows what the standard trans in it would be, markings, pan shape etc, to have my kid look at it and tell me over the phone.
I have read they came with TH200, TH200C and 200R4, I assume the 305 Montes would have a TH350.
Will a TH350 attach to a 200 V6? Thanks guys
